Crew Profile: Meet Captain- Gary Rhodes, Chef/First Mate- Dana
Captain Gary is a man of many hats! Hanging out with him on board Avalanche, you may find yourself kite-boarding the crystal blue waters, hoisting and trimming sails, chart plotting to find your best point of sail, scuba diving ship wrecks, and navigating the stars. Gary loves to share his enthusiasm for these water sports and get others involved. Certified to teach these activities, the array of new skills one can learn from Gary during a charter are priceless.
Born and raised in Northern California, Gary has been sailing since he was twelve. He has lived on multiple sailboats including one of his own since 2010. In 2014 he became an American Sailing Association instructor and advanced his knowledge of navigation,
weather, and vessel systems. He is licensed to teach ASA 101 Basic Keel Boat, 103 Basic Coastal Cruising, 104 Bareboat Cruising, 105 Coastal Navigation, and 114 Cruising Catamaran.
Since 2004 Gary has been a professional kite-boarding instructor as well as a sponsored rider. As an Advanced Open Water diver, he also enjoys leading underwater tours and maybe even snagging some Caribbean lobsters to cook fresh! Living and working on boats for so long, fishing is second nature to him. You may even find him in the galley, alongside Dana, preparing the fresh catch as he also is a great chef! His love of outdoor activities is deeper than the oceans that he dives. When not out on the ocean, you may find Gary snowboarding, paragliding, and skydiving.
His high school and college education background in auto mechanics and advanced welding helped him become a practiced engineer. Gary enjoys the challenge of problem solving and his confidence in mechanics assure a safe and comfortable environment.
Gary encourages his guests to not just come see the Caribbean, but to come experience the Caribbean!
Chef/ first mate Dana Stehr was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. Growing up in a family of chefs from the South, her passion for cooking naturally developed at a very young age. Her mother always stressed the importance of fresh ingredients and supporting local farmers while also making sure every dish manifested comfort. She now seeks to incorporate local ingredients and flavors in her dishes while always aspiring to create something new for guests to enjoy.
Summers spent at the Gulf in Alabama led to her appreciation of the sea, but her interest in sailing was not discovered until she moved to St. Thomas in 2015. Since then, Dana has worked as a first mate while aspiring to learn as much as possible about what the sea has to offer! Dana’s passion and knowledge for food continue as she currently pursues a post-graduate degree in Food and Nutrition.

We had a Fabulous Time
My Husband and I sailed on Avalanche with Captain Eric and another couple in the Virgin Islands during February 2016. We had a fabulous time sailing, snorkeling, swimming, exploring the islands and dining in the Virgin Islands on Avalanche. The boat is very comfortable. The inside and outside seating and dining areas gave us plenty of room to socialize and our stateroom gave us privacy. Captain Eric is very knowledgeable of the Virgin Island and has a wonderful personality. If you enjoy exploring the islands, snorkeling and relaxing this is the boat for you. We look forward to our next voyage on Avalanche.
The Memories Will Last Forever!
What a wonderfully beautiful experience sailing on Avalanche out of Newport, RI to Cuttyhunk and Martha’s Vineyard islands! Captain Eric made the six of us feel welcome and relaxed with his professional sailing skills and knowledge of the area. The memories of the delicious fish and lobsters dinners on the boat watching the sunset will last forever.

I will certainly remember this for years to come!
“This vacation was amazing! I will certainly remember this for years to come, you were so kind and full of energy. This was both exciting and relaxing, a perfect combo of both…Eric, you did an awesome job navigating. You were so interactive and didn’t just do the things that we couldn’t, you went full 100%. Thank you for making this reunion with my family amazing.”

We didn’t know what to expect from our first sailing trip…
“We didn’t know what to expect from our first sailing trip, and you have set the bar extremely high for our next trip (and hopefully our next trip will be with you as well). Everything was first class…It’s hard to find the words to say thank you to someone who has given you treasured memories to last a lifetime, but we hope you know how much we greatly appreciated all your efforts and hospitality with our whole group.”

This was an experience my family, and particularly my children, will never forget
Eric, you were excellent at recruiting first mates. It was great fun watching Will trying to master the clove hitch knot, or Andrew going below decks to help with the anchor….We thank you very much for the wonderful sailing vacation in the BVIs!!! Thank you again for all of your hard work and hospitality. This was an experience my family, and particularly my children, will never forget.”

Man, we had a great time!
“Man–we had a great time! Eric, we appreciate your flexibility and great attitude doing so. We had a lot of fun as a family and just Cheryl and I together.
I know the kids enjoyed this week as a transition from their own lives to getting together as a family.”

Peaceful, Adventurous, Beautiful, Relaxing and Eventful
“To say this week was “fun” just doesn’t even express how peaceful, adventurous, beautiful, relaxing and eventful it was- all at the same time!! You gave it and us your all and we cannot say thank you enough. This was definitely a week we will always cherish together as a family.”
~Family of 5
A Wonderful Week of Sailing and Shenanigans
“Thank you so much for a wonderful week of sailing and shenanigans!
Your passion and knowledge made this a truly memorable experience- from snorkeling with the sea turtles in Salt Pond Bay to sailing on the hobie cat at the Bitter End, each day was an adventure.
We will miss your company and look forward to the time when our paths cross again.”

Travel Is As Much About the Places You Go As It Is About the People You Meet
“You have been an incredible crew to all of us. The perfect host. This trip was meant as an adventure for us, a chance to visit the beautiful BVI. Of course travel is as much about the places you meet as it is about the people you meet! And we met the perfect people to guide us on our family adventure.
We saw wonderful spots including Bitter End, Francis Bay, Guana Island, and White Bay. We snorkeled at great spots including our favorite, “the Indians.”… Eric, you run a tight ship, careful with all the details. That allowed us to sail in comfort and without hassle.
Without hesitation, you enabled our wishes, motoring to shore or tubing and of course sailing! It was a terrific vacation for us and we have you to thank for it. May our paths cross again in the future. “
